BUCHAREST, Dec 1 (Reuters) – A shiny metal monolith vanished on Tuesday from the mountains of Romania, where it had appeared amid furor over a similar object in the Utah desert.
A spokeswoman for police in the Piatra Neamt jurisdiction said officers are conducting an inquiry into the illegally installed 9-foot-tall structure, which turned up Friday in a protected archaeological area on the Bâtca Doamnei plateau.
Reporter Robert Iosub of the local newspaper Ziar Piatra Neamt, who had seen the structure, told Reuters, “An unidentified person, apparently a bad local welder, made it. … Now all that remains is just a small hole covered by rocky soil.”
The “bad welder” comment was a reference to a messy joint in the sheet metal.
Mayor Andrei Carabelea of Piatra Neamt posted a photo of it Saturday, speculating about alien origin and stating, “I am honored that they chose our city.”
A similar pillar was seen Nov. 18 by a helicopter crew over the red rock desert of eastern Utah. It drew crowds to the remote area last week and was removed by unknown persons late Friday.
It generated excitement internationally among science-fiction fans, hearkening to Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film “2001: A Space Odyssey.” In the movie, an alien monolith is a recurring symbol that appears to play a role in the development of human evolution.
