49ers pregame report at Rams: Raheem Mostert, Deebo Samuel should help Nick Mullens

For the first time this turbulent season, quarterback Nick Mullens gets Raheem Mostert to act as a complementary piece if not the catalyst of the 49ers’ offense.
Mostert returns to the lineup after a four-game break to recover from a high ankle sprain. He was sidelined by a knee injury once Mullens initially replaced Jimmy Garoppolo after halftime of a Week 2 win at the Jets and Mullens’ starts the next two games.
Mostert has totaled 303 rushing yards and 150 receiving yards — with one touchdown in both aspect — over his four games.
Other 49ers coming back from injuries are wide receiver Deebo Samuel (hamstring), running back Jeff Wilson (ankle) and cornerback Richard Sherman (calf).
Left tackle Trent Williams and defensive linemen Arik Armstead and Javon Kinlaw are all expected to start after coming off the COVID-19 reserve list last week. Suiting up after being questionable are tight end Jordan Reed and linebackers Dre Greenlaw and Azeez Al-Shaair.
Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and defensive tackle D.J. Jones won’t play, however, as they remain on COVID-19 reserve.
Aiyuk’s absence is just another hurdle in a season full of roster juggling, especially at wide receiver, and coach Kyle Shanahan believes that turnover has hindered Mullens and Garoppolo.
“That’s been a huge challenge for Nick and it would be for C.J. (Beathard) if he gets in and it was for Jimmy,” Shanahan said Friday. “So, I think it’s a little unfair to judge the quarterbacks a hundred percent on how they’ve been each game in terms of stats and the score and things like that.
“I try to just watch the situations they’re in, what I think they’re capable of doing and I think Nick has played like Nick. I think he’s been a really solid guy for us. He gives us a chance to win, but we’ve got to play better around him in order for him to play to his full ability.”
Mullens has lost his past three starts and committed seven turnovers in those.
“If I protect the football, I think I’m a pretty darn good quarterback and that’s really what matters most,” Mullens said Friday. “I’d like to improve on that after these past couple of games, but other than that, just stick to my reads, stick to my progressions, be accurate.
“I’ve had some good plays, had some bad plays, but you just keep working along and continue to work and execute at a high level.”
