San Jose State football: Cade Hall, many other Spartans unavailable for Arizona Bowl

San Jose State will be short-handed when it plays Ball State in the Arizona Bowl.
As announced on the Spartans’ pregame radio show Thursday, SJSU will be without defensive lineman Cade Hall, wide receiver Bailey Gaither, running back/kick returner Shamar Garrett, safety Tre Hall and two unnamed starting offensive linemen.
CBS reported in its pregame show that Kyle Hoppe and Tyler Stevens are the offensive linemen who won’t play.
The Spartans also won’t have offensive coordinator Kevin McGiven and defensive coordinator Derrick Odum, according to the radio broadcast.
“Once the game begins, I can make an acknowledgment who is ‘not available,’” San Jose State sports information director Lawrence Fan said in an email to the Bay Area News Group. “It would be inappropriate to attribute “not available” strictly to COVID-19 issues or protocols.”
Hall, the Mountain West’s defensive player of the year, led San Jose State this season with 10 sacks and 12 tackles for loss and was named a first-team All-America this week by the Sporting News.
San Jose State returned home from Las Vegas after its victory over Boise State in the Mountain West championship game on Dec. 19 because coach Brent Brennan wanted his players to spend Christmas with their families.
Asked last weekend if he has second-guessed that  decision, Brennan said, “I have not.”
It didn’t get any better for the Spartans when the game started.
Tight end Derrick Deese Jr. took a nasty fall on the first play after receiving a pass from quarterback Nick Starkel.
Deese was upended and landed on his head. He was taken to the medical tent after being on the ground for several minutes.
Deese Jr. was an all-Mountain West honorable mention in his first full season with San Jose State. In seven games, Deese Jr. had 19 receptions for 239 passing yards and five touchdowns.
The 19th-ranked Spartans (7-0) are aiming to complete their first undefeated season since going 13-0 in 1939.
