Names released of three teens killed in Livermore crash

LIVERMORE — The Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau has identified the three young men who died late Monday night when their car collided with a semi-truck.
The three teens have been identified as Rahal Brar, 18; Shej Kumar, 16; and Ian Ericksen, 16, all from Livermore. One teen attended Del Valle Continuation High School, the other Livermore High School. The driver, Brar, was a graduate of Vineyard High School in Livermore. Two of the young men were relatives, according to the school district.
Gabriela Griffith was Ian and Shej’s manager at the Baskin-Robbins ice cream store where they worked in Livermore, on First Street. The shop closed on Tuesday in their memory and to grieve the loss of what she describes as wonderful, good kids.
“I work with a lot of teenagers, and I see everything. (Ian) was a really nice kid, respectful, honest, and had very caring parents,” she said.
Ian had worked for the store for nearly a year, Shej had just started about three weeks ago, but was a fast learner. Both had great customer service skills, were respectful and hard-working, she said.
It was Ian’s father who went to the store Tuesday morning to tell them what happened, Griffith said. The two young teens had been picked up by Shej’s cousin, Brar, Monday night after their shift. The two boys didn’t drive, Griffith said, and she tried to schedule them at times where parents or relatives could pick them up.
Griffith said felt like they were her own children, and was distraught on Tuesday when she learned of their deaths. They were well-liked by all, and she’s seen the outpouring of messages on social media.
“It’s just shocking,” she said.
The community grieved on social media posts that the young men were gone too soon, sending prayers and thoughts to their families.
The crash happened in the 5600 block of Las Positas Road around 10:30 p.m., according to Livermore police. The semi-truck driver was the only person in the truck and was not injured.
That stretch of Las Positas is a divided four-lane thoroughfare in a light industrial area. The speed limit is 35 mph.
“At this time of year when we take time to celebrate, appreciate and cherish our family and friendships, it is particularly somber that we instead acknowledge such a devastating loss to our schools and communities,” said Superintendent Kelly Bowers in a message to the community Tuesday.
“This news shocks and saddens us and serves as a reminder that life is precious.”
