OAKLAND — A man trying to evade California Highway Patrol officers early Monday was arrested after he began driving the wrong way on Interstate 580 and was involved in a head-on collision that killed the driver of a minivan and left a passenger in the suspect’s SUV with major injuries, authorities said.
The name of the man killed has not been released.
According to the CHP, about 12:30 a.m. Monday officers tried to stop a black Chevrolet Suburban for unsafe speed and having no license plates in the eastbound lanes of I-580 at Fruitvale Avenue.
The Suburban fled from officers who began a vehicle pursuit.
The Suburban exited the freeway at MacArthur Boulevard and moments later re-entered the freeway from MacArthur Boulevard traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes, the CHP said.
The officers then discontinued the pursuit, the CHP said.
About one minute later, the Suburban collided head on with a Honda Odyssey minivan, on I-580 eastbound, just west of 35th Avenue, the CHP said.
The driver of the minivan, an adult male in his 30’s, sustained fatal injuries. The adult female passenger of the Suburban sustained major injuries and was transported to a hospital, the CHP said.
The driver of the Suburban fled on foot off the freeway and was later apprehended with the assistance of Oakland Police Department and the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office in a nearby residential neighborhood.

The driver of the Suburban, who the CHP identified as Deville Daggs, 30, of Oakland, sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a hospital. Upon his release from the hospital he will be transported to Santa Rita Jail and booked on several felony charges, the CHP said.
At least two eastbound lanes of I-580 eastbound and the 35th avenue offramp were closed for several hours while officers investigated.
The incident is still under investigation and anyone with information is asked to call the CHP Oakland office at 510- 457-2875.
