It’s been a slow offseason for Chaim Bloom and the Red Sox, but on Monday, they finally filled a need.
The Red Sox have signed right-handed hitting outfielder Hunter Renfroe, the club announced. The deal is for one year. Renfroe, who was non-tendered by the Rays, will receive a base salary of $3.1 million in 2021, according to the Globe, and could remain under team control through 2023 with arbitration.
The 28-year-old Renfroe had a down season with the Rays during the pandemic-shortened 2020 but hit 33 homers with the Padres in 2019. Renfroe has mostly played right and left field throughout his career and adds some much-needed flexibility to an outfield that will at least include Alex Verdugo and Andrew Beninendi next season, though the Red Sox still have a void in center field with Jackie Bradley entering free agency.
